Rather than dumping them in landfills, several California towns dump used Christmas trees into Lake Havasu and the Colorado River. The trees replace the organic matter that used to be carried down the Colorado before the massive dams that power hydroelectric plants and feed irrigation systems were built.
The trees are dropped into specific parts of the lake and river where concrete and PVC pipes have been driven to hold them in place as artificial reefs. The decaying trees provide food for moss and algae. The moss and algae provide food for small and young fish. The little fish also hide among the branches.
The new habitat has sparked a resurgence of fish populations in the formerly nigh-fishless waters. And the idea is spreading to other areas in California.
