Crystals tend to form in open spaces in rock, whether that’s a crack, a vesicle, or a brachipod shell, as seen here. Brachiopods were and are a common marine invertebrate. The crystals seen here are calcite; the large one in the middle displays a nearly perfect scalenohedral crystal form.
